The game doesn't trust you to save the game for yourself. The game doesn't trust you to find your own way through it. The game doesn't trust you to sequence break. The game doesn't trust you to memorise its map. But here, Samus has an attack that negates all enemy hits, and acts like she's in a Ninja Theory game for those little cutscene finishers. Metroid's meant to be leaning into these tinges of horror, and this is doubly true for the Linear Metroids like 2 and Fusion which have a far greater reliance on bleak ambiance. It's just a totally neutered Metroid game. The reflective parts of Metroid 2 are ruined by injecting unsuitable music and shoving gameplay into them. Samus Returns has effectively no narrative, perhaps less meaningful narrative than Metroid 2. The art direction was probably as good as you'll get out of a 2.5D metroid game, but it's distractingly strange to see 3D dioramas of these rooms, and not being able to run into the back/foreground. Now you can forget about how all the areas connect. Unraveling the network of a map as you explore and make the unknown, known. Finding shortcuts as you get new items back to the older areas so it's not a slog. Getting to know the map is the appeal, exploring and knowing the new found lands. If you could execute it whilst moving you'd solve it, but as-is it's the worst part of the game's moment-to-moment gameplay.Ī Metroid game with Fast Travel. You can't walljump up a single wall anymore, because you can't influence the jump trajectory. You can't walljump in 1x1meter spaces anymore. It's not a good Metroid Game, it's like 2 in the lack of exploration, but it includes moves from Super, Zero, like wall jumping. I don't understand why people don't say this, I kinda thought the big draw of Metroid was either the 2/Fusion aspect with a well guided story, or the explorative aspect, with 1/Super/Zero. Even if I take out AM2R, which absolutely outshined it in almost every regard. And I don't like being a bummer, or being down on creative people who clearly love Metroid, but I wasn't impressed by their Metroid 2 remake.
